A Silent Witness to the Birth of Belief

This striking jade sculpture draws inspiration from the sacred figurative tradition of the Hongshan Culture (c. 4700–2900 BCE), one of the earliest known civilisations to elevate jade into an object of spiritual and ritual significance.

The figure is shown seated in a compact, meditative posture, crowned by an elongated, flame-like headdress—an iconic and enigmatic feature associated with Hongshan ritual imagery. The abstracted facial features and simplified anatomy reflect a symbolic, rather than literal, representation of the human form, suggesting a deity, shaman, or ancestral presence rather than an individual portrait.

Carved from naturally mottled green jade, the sculpture retains organic colour transitions and mineral inclusions that enhance its sense of age and authenticity. The polished surfaces contrast with subtle carving marks, echoing the restrained yet powerful aesthetic language of prehistoric jade craftsmanship.

This piece embodies the Hongshan worldview, where jade was believed to serve as a conduit between heaven, earth, and humanity—an object not merely of beauty, but of cosmological meaning.

Artist: Li Chunxi, Zhenping, Henan, China

Cultural Significance

The Hongshan Culture is recognised as one of the foundational sources of Chinese spiritual symbolism. Jade figures of this form are widely interpreted as ritual icons connected to early concepts of divinity, authority, and the afterlife. The exaggerated headdress may represent spiritual ascent, transformation, or communion with higher realms.
