It stands as the world's largest known reserve of black nephrite jade, distinguished by its unique iron characteristics that differentiate it from all other global jade sources in terms of density, color, and toughness.
What makes Australian Jade special?
Australian Jade is renowned for its fine-grained texture and extreme density - with specific gravity measurements beyond the technical definition of nephrite. In 1985, Pennsylvania University recorded the toughness of Australian Nephrite as beyond any other material ever tested (225k v 300k) (Schiller 1997).
What is the history of Cowell Jade Province?
Discovered in 1965 by local farmer Harry Schiller, the Cowell jade Province in South Australia stands as one of the world's largest known reserves of nephrite jade. After the Nephrite Jade deposits where discovered in Australia, the South Australian Government prepared over 14 major Geological reports on the deposits.
