Discovered in 1965 by local farmer Harry Schiller, the Cowell jade Province in South Australia stands as one of the world's largest known reserves of nephrite jade. After the Nephrite Jade deposits where discovered in Australia, the South Australian Government prepared over 14 major Geological reports on the deposits. The most recent is available here:

Over 110 Jade outcrops have been identified and pegged for mining - less than half of these have been actively mined in the past 20 years.

Even today, we are discovering new outcrops. This one has surface stones with 93% Tremolite, found in May 2025, which will be pegged and mined in due course.

So far, proven Nephrite resources of over 45,000 tonnes have been identified, with only a tiny proportion mined.

Steve Moignard, the Managing Director of Australian Jade, has a major focus on supplying the China market for Nephrite Jade.

He has identified the fine-grained black jades from Australia as good candidates for jewellery-grade carving in China.

While China was a closed economy when Jade was first discovered in Australia, in the years since some 200 tonnes was exported to China 1990-2010. This exported Australian Jade was marketed and sold in China as "Russian Jade" or XinJiang Jade.

Now, Australian Jade has established its own warehouse in Nanyang to sell raw stones and products with their true provenance, Australia.
