A contemporary Australian black nephrite jade horse pendant by Zhuang Qingfang, created for those who choose their own path and remain true to themselves.

The future is unwritten. We are all dark horses.

The Whispering Horse Pendant carries a message of quiet confidence.

Before the outcome is decided, any of us can be the dark horse.

Rather than portraying the horse through dramatic movement or elaborate detail, Zhuang Qingfang reduces it to an expressive, contemporary form. The elongated silhouette and restrained lines capture a horse that feels calm yet ready to move—possessing strength without needing to display it.

Carved from Australian black nephrite jade from Cowell, South Australia, the dark stone gives another layer of meaning to the Chinese idea of the “dark horse”: someone whose potential may be underestimated, but who ultimately surpasses expectations.

The road may be long. Move through it freely, calmly and in your own way.

Design Inspiration & Symbolism

In Chinese, a 黑马 (hēi mǎ), literally “black horse,” describes someone who emerges unexpectedly, exceeds expectations and reveals abilities others did not foresee.

It is this idea—not simply the physical image of a horse—that gives the Whispering Horse its spirit.

Zhuang Qingfang uses the horse to express a particular attitude towards life: move forward without being defined by the expectations of others.

The design can be read through several interconnected ideas:

• Horse — freedom, movement and vitality
• Black horse — hidden potential and the ability to exceed expectations
• Forward movement — continuing despite the distance ahead
• Restrained lines — confidence without display
• Black jade — visual strength, depth and permanence
• Individual path — remaining true to one's essential character

The original sentiment behind the work says:

Though the road ahead may be long, walk it with freedom and composure.

May this black jade horse accompany you beyond the expectations of others, while you remain steadfastly yourself.

Why This Piece

Whispering Horse is not designed as a traditional representation of power or victory.

Its strength is quieter.

Zhuang removes unnecessary ornament and allows the horse's character to emerge through silhouette, proportion and line. This restraint reflects his “Zen Jade” (禅玉) philosophy: respect the material, simplify the form and allow meaning to reveal itself naturally.

The choice of Australian black jade is especially significant. The stone transforms the metaphor of the “dark horse” into something tangible—a piece that can be carried as a personal reminder that potential does not need to be announced before it is realised.

Be underestimated. Keep moving. Remain yourself.

Zhuang Jia Collection

The Zhuang Jia Collection brings Australian jade into dialogue with the artistic language of Zhuang Qingfang (庄庆芳), a contemporary jade artist from Sihui, Guangdong, China.

With more than two decades devoted to jade carving, Zhuang developed his distinctive “Zen Jade” (禅玉) style around a simple philosophy: respect the material and follow nature.

Drawing inspiration from Chinese Zen philosophy, Buddhism, Taoism, ancient jade forms, architecture and the natural world, he removes unnecessary complexity and uses restrained, gentle lines to bring material, colour, form and meaning into harmony.

For Zhuang Jia, he applies this philosophy to Australian nephrite jade from Cowell, South Australia—allowing an ancient Australian stone and an ancient Chinese artistic tradition to meet in a new contemporary language.

His aim is simple:

To let every piece speak to people.

Australian Jade – Ancient Stone. Modern Spirit.
