Tiger Tally – Commanding Power, Preserved in Stone

This exquisite jade carving represents a modern interpretation of the ancient “Tiger Tally” (虎符), a military credential from China’s Warring States period through to the Han dynasty. Crafted by emerging artists Han Wei and Yang Mingzheng, both based in the jade carving capital of Zhenping, Henan, the piece is an elegant fusion of historical reverence and contemporary craftsmanship.

In ancient China, the tiger tally was a symbol of imperial military command. It consisted of two matching halves—one held by the emperor, the other by the commanding officer. Only when the two halves matched could troops be mobilized, ensuring loyalty and control over military power. The tiger motif, a symbol of strength and authority, reinforces its association with military might.

Carved from deep black Australian jade, this piece echoes the powerful presence and formal symmetry of traditional tiger tallies, while showcasing fluid, stylized lines and fine detailing typical of high-level jade artistry.
